Karnak

Karnak

Karnak is a large temple complex comprising many temples, pylons, chapels and other buildings. Karnak is situated in the ancient city of Thebes, in Upper Egypt. Senusret-I built Karnak, from the era of the Middle Kingdom to the Ptolemaic Period.

Why it is special: Built more than 2,000 years ago, this city of temples was named Karnak, meaning the most select of places. The temples are dedicated to Amun-re, the sun deity; in honour of whom the Egyptians built a complex so grand that the entire Cathedral of Notre Dam could easily fit within its walls. Towering pillars and obelisks, sphinxes and over 5,000 statues decorate this complex making it one of the most sacred sites of its time.
