Colosseum of Rome

Colosseum-of-Rome

The Colosseum is an oval amphitheatre that is also known as the Flavian Amphitheatre. The Colosseum was built in the centre of Rome, Italy. Construction had started in 70 AD and was completed in 80 AD.

Why it is special: Considered the largest amphitheatre ever built, the Colosseum could house between 50,000 and 80,000 spectators. Built using sand and concrete, the Colosseum was constructed and modified over the rule of three emperors. The Colosseum was largely used for gladiator contests, and also for other public displays such as mock sea battles, animal hunts, executions, dramas and re-enactments of famous battles.
