Also known as the Papal Basilica of St. Peter, it is an Italian renaissance church. It is the place of pilgrimage and liturgical functions. It is located in the papal enclave, the Vatican City, within Rome. The Church was built between 1506 and 1626 and replaced the old St. Peter’s Basilica that was built in the 4th century AD.

Why it is special: It is not just one of the largest churches in the world, but it is also one of the most renowned works of renaissance architecture. Designed by many artists including Michelangelo, Bramante, Maderno and Bernini, the church is a beautiful work of art with its iconic dome, naves and innumerous artworks. The holiest of Catholic shrines, the Church is the burial site for St. Peter, the first Pope and one of Christ’s Apostles.
