Newgrange

Newgrange-Ireland

Newgrange is a prehistoric Monument built during the Neolithic period. Newgrange is situated in County Meath in Ireland. The Monument was built approximately around 3200 BC, making it one of the oldest monuments–older than even the Egyptian Pyramids and Stonehenge.

Why it is special: A large circular mound, with stone passageways and interior chambers, the Newgrange is a fine example of Neolithic rock art and prehistoric culture. The Monument raises questions on the advanced science applied by the prehistoric folk, especially since the monument is aligned to the rising sun that floods the inner chambers with light during the winter solstice. It is ringed by a retaining wall and engraved kerbstones. While the site was sealed for many millennia, historians and archaeologists began to take interest and study this monument only around the 17th century.
