Why it is special: This Museum was originally built as a Greek orthodox Christian patriarchal Basilica that was later converted into a mosque. After its conversion until 1616, Hagia Sophia had been the principal mosque of Istanbul. Known for its exquisite Byzantine architecture, the highlighting feature of the museum is its massive dome. Its architectural style inspired many mosques built through the ages including the Blue Mosque.
