Matterhorn, also known as Monte Cervino, is a mountain in the Alps. Matterhorn is located in the Alps, between the Aosta Valley of Italy and Valais of Switzerland. Matterhorn has existed since the Ice age.

Why it is special: Matterhorn, meaning ‘meadow’ and ‘peak’ in German remained unclimbed until 1865. While most other peaks in the Alps were scaled, it became a matter of international contest to reach its summit. At 4,478 metres, the near symmetrical Matterhorn is the 6th highest summit in the Alps. Often referred to as the ‘Mountain of Mountains’, Matterhorn has become an iconic symbol of the Alps.
