Claire was a good student. She had also been the champion of her school in the spelling competition for four years in a row. But this year, a new girl named Opal had joined her class and everyone was expecting her to win the competition. On the day of the competition, Opal and Claire participated and did well. When the results were announced, everyone was surprised. Both the girls had scored top marks. Claire went home. She told her mother everything and cried on her shoulder. Her mother said, “You had been the champion for four years, but today you had to share the crown with Opal. I understand that you are not comfortable doing so. But have you thought about how Opal must be feeling? She is new in the class. Winning this competition meant a lot to her. She did her best.” Claire understood this. She became Opal’s best friend.
