Bertha loved dogs. She wanted to have a pet dog. She told her mother, “I want to have a pet dog at home. I want to take care of it every day.” But her mother said, “You can’t have one, dear, because I am allergic to dog hair.” Bertha was very sad. Every day, she would think, ‘How I wish I had a pet dog!’ One day, she told her grandfather, “It would be so lovely if I could have just one dog at home to love and care for!” Her grandfather took her outside their house. He pointed to the stray dogs and said, “There are so many stray dogs here. No one wants them. But they need someone to take care of them. Who says you need to take them home to make them your pets?” Bertha listened to her grandfather. Instead of one pet, she now had many!
