Gechina was a poor girl. She wove baskets to earn a living. She lived in a hut and worked hard every day. Gechina also had a hobby. She loved gardening. Her backyard was full of the biggest and brightest roses in all colours. Once, the Queen fell ill. The royal doctor could not cure her with medicines or herbs. Finally, he announced, “Only the reddest of roses can cure the Queen, because it is a symbol of beauty and love.” The Queen’s soldiers brought her many red roses, but she did not like them. Gechina heard of the cure and rushed to the palace with the reddest rose from her backyard. The Queen cheered up when she saw the flower. She asked Gechina to bring her a red rose every day. When the Queen was cured, she named Gechina the royal gardener and showered her with gifts. Gechina’s hobby had made her rich!
