Once, Tenali had a dish of a seedless brinjal at the royal court. He was so impressed that he told his wife about it. She also demanded to get some for home. Since it was in the royal kitchen garden, Tenali refused but on being insisted each day, he stole a few and brought for the wife. When she cooked, it was delicious.
So she demanded that they should wake their sleeping son too. When the son didn’t wake up Tenali sprinkled water on his face, who thought it was raining and tried the dish.
On finding out someone stole brinjals from the royal garden the king was furious. Later Tenali was accused since he had been curious for brinjals. To testify his son was called who accepted that he had a dish of seedless brinjal last night. To save himself Tenali asked him how the weather was. Thereupon, he replied it was raining.
Tenali told the king that he was sleepy and couldn’t be trusted since the weather was absolutely clear last night. The king agreed, freeing Tenali of the charges.
