The blind man Abdulla continued, “I was born in Baghdad and lost my parents in quick succession. After working hard, I became the owner of 80 camels. I made friends with a dervish who informed me about treasure near the mountains.
I became greedy and went along with him to the mountains. There appeared a palace and treasure magically. We collected gold and lots of precious stones and some ointment.
As agreed before, we shared 40 camels each between us. While parting ways, greed got the better of me and I went up to the dervish and asked 10 of them back, since the dervish had renounced the world. He agreed. Gradually, with persuasion, I took all my camels back.
But my greed led me ask for the ointment too. The dervish willingly gave it to me saying if the ointment touched my left eye, I would receive the world’s wealth. But if it touched the right eye, I would become blind. When I saw great wealth after applying ointment on the left eye, I applied it on my right also and lost both eyes. The dervish took all the camels.
