Cereal flakes that we have nowadays for breakfast were created by the American 7th day Adventists who formed the Western Health Institute of Reform in the year 1860. They manufactured, promoted and marketed wholesome cereals. Will Keith Kellogg is the father of W.K. Kellogg Foundation which was established in the year 1906. In an attempt to improve on the hospital diet for patients, Will’s brother Dr. John Harvey Kellogg was on the lookout for some digestible substitute for bread using the technique of boiling wheat. A pot of boiled wheat was accidentally left to stand by, by Kellogg, which led it to become very soft. When this tampered wheat was left to dry, each of the wheat grains came out in the form of thin large flakes. These flakes came out to be very tasty. John Harvey Kellogg on 31 May, 1884, filed for the patent for this flaked cereal and also the process for preparing it. The patent was granted in 1896.
