Long ago, Thunder and Lightning lived on the earth with the other people. Thunder was an old mother sheep and Lightning was her son, a ram. The King made them live at the far end of the town, as far as possible from the other people’s houses. Whenever the ram was furious, he used to go around and burn everything that came his way. He even knocked down trees; destroyed the crops on the farms, and sometimes killed people. The moment Thunder knew that her son was behaving badly, she would call out to him in a very loud voice to stop and not to do any more damage. But Lightning did not listen to what his mother said and when he was in a bad mood, he used to do a greater damage. At last, the people could not stand it any longer, and they complained to the King.
Thunder and Lightning in the Sky
So, the King ordered that the sheep, Thunder and her son ram, Lightning should immediately leave the town and live in the far bush. This did not help much; when Lightning got angry, he still burnt the forest, and the flames sometimes spread to the farms and destroyed them. So, the people complained again. The King called all his ministers for the advice. Together, they hit upon a plan. They decided to completely banish Thunder and Lightning from the earth and send them to the sky where they could not cause so much destruction. Ever since, when Lightning loses his temper, he causes damage as before. But one can hear his mother, Thunder, rebuking him in a loud voice and telling him to stop. Sometimes, however, when the mother goes away some distance from Lightning, one can still see Thunder furious and doing damage, but his mother cannot be heard.
