The Bat and the Bush Rat

A bush rat named Oyot and Emiong, the bat were great friends. They always ate together. But the bat was secretly jealous of the bush rat. Whenever Emiong cooked the food it was very tasty, and Oyot would ask him how he made the food so tasty, “How do you prepare the soup? It is so tasty.” The bat replied, “I always boil myself in the water, and my flesh is very sweet. That is why the soup is good.” Emiong, then, told the bush rat that he would show him how it was done. He got the pot of warm water but told Oyot that it was boiling water. Emiong jumped into it and came out shortly. When the soup was served, it was as tasty as usual because Emiong had prepared it beforehand.

Why the Bat Flies by Night

Oyot, then, quickly ran home and told his wife that he was going to make tasty soup following the recipe of the bat. So, he asked his wife to boil some water, which she did. After that, when his wife was not looking at him, he jumped into the pot, and soon died. Now, when his wife looked into the pot and saw the dead body of her husband boiling, she was very furious. She immediately went to the King and told him everything. The King ordered to imprison Emiong. Everyone turned out to catch the bat, but as he predicted trouble, he flew away into the bush and hid himself. Throughout the day, everyone tried to catch him. So, he changed his habits and came out only at night to eat when it was dark. And that is the reason, one can never see the bat during the daytime.
