Long ago, all the animals and human beings assembled in front of God. God said that early next morning when the sun appeared, the one who came first would get a good share. God had expected the buffalo to come first but to his amazement, the man came first. At night, the dogs had overheard God talking to the buffalo and saying, “You come first, when you see the sun and I’ll give you the best share.” One of the dogs went and told the man, “Get up early and get the best share.” So he did, and when the God asked him who he was, he said, “I am the foster-son of dogs.” God gave spears to the man. Thereafter, the buffalo came. God said to him, “All the weapons are taken. Only horns are left for you and other herbivorous animals to protect themselves.” So, they were given horns. And from then on, all the cattle became servants to man.
