Helpful Chen

Once, there was a rich merchant. He had everything in life, whatever money could buy. So, he was very happy. The merchant was a good man. He was very helpful and kind to his servants and was loved by all.

But sadly, the merchant caught an eye disease from one of his travels. None of the doctors in his city were able to cure it. Finally, the merchant offered a reward to anyone who could find a cure for his disease.

Chen, a vegetable-seller, knew about a magical herb, which could cure the merchant’s disease. Thus, the very next day, he went into the forest in search of the herb. Soon, he reached an anthill. It was flooded with water. Chen felt sorry for the ants. He drained the water and saved the ants.

As Chen walked on, he saw that a bird was about to pounce on a poor centipede. But before it could do that, Chen scared the bird away and rescued the centipede. That night, the same centipede appeared in his dream and said, “Chen, the herb can be found at the roots of a pine tree that has two trunks.”

In the morning, Chen went to the forest. He found the pine tree with two trunks. However, Chen could not reach the roots. Just then, the ants appeared and got the herbs for him.

Chen went and gave the herbs to the merchant. The herbs cured the merchant’s eye disease and Chen received a handsome reward in return.
