The winter had been severe. There was snow all over. Harry, Jo and Minnie had found it boring sitting inside all day. So as soon as the snow stopped falling, they trooped out to make a snowman.
Harry had a carrot for a nose and some chocolate drops for eyes. Jo brought a slice of tomato and gave him a big smile! Then they brought Papa’s old gloves and made his hands. And Harry’s hat was put on his head. He had a coat with buttons that Mummy had given them. He was really a handsome snowman!
When evening fell, they all went in. The snowman stood quietly under the stars. They did not know that, while they were making the snowman, a little Crystal Fairy had been watching them from a pine tree. She saw them chatting and laughing, building the snowman.
The Crystal Fairy had neither family nor friends. She was very lonely. So she felt slightly sad and jealous of the children. “I wish I had a friend too,” she thought.
She looked at the snowman and wondered, “Why not make friends with the snowman?” It was a good idea. She decided to put a spell on the snowman. So, she flew around him and suddenly the snowman moved!
“Hello,” he said and the Crystal Fairy smiled happily. Her spell had worked!
“I’m Crystal Fairy. What’s your name?” she asked.
“Hm….. I think I should have a name, but I don’t know what it is. Can you find a name for me?”
“May I call you Snowy?” asked Crystal.
“Oh, yes! That’s a nice name,” agreed Snowy.
After that, every evening after the children had gone indoors, Snowy and Crystal would have long chats. She told him all about the pine forest, polar bears and seals, huskies and sleds. Snowy told her all that the children had done throughout the day. The days passed and they both were very happy.
But the winter was coming to an end. The snow would melt and vanish soon.
One day, Snowy saw a little puddle around him. It was melting time! He and Crystal were very sad. Slowly, Snowy melted. The leaves began to turn green. Little flowers pushed their way through the grass.
The children came out one morning and there was no sign of the snowman. A carrot, the gloves, the hat and buttons lay there along with something shiny. Harry picked it up and saw it was a lovely crystal!
