Why Does the Chameleon
Shake her Head?

Once upon a time, a chameleon and a dog were very good friends. The dog was a pet in a big house whereas the chameleon lived in the garden in front of the house. Every day, the chameleon noticed that the dog walked with the man. One day, the chameleon asked the dog, “Why do you go with the man every day?”
“The man and I are friends,” answered the dog, “The man is a hunter and we go hunting together. I help him to hunt. He cooks the meat and we eat it together.” “Wow! You are so lucky,” said the chameleon. After some days, the man and the dog went hunting together. The dog said goodbye to the chameleon before leaving. Then the dog went to the forest with the hunter. The hunter killed an antelope and carried it home. The hunter made dinner from the meat and began to eat it.

The chameleon was sitting at a little distance and looking at him. He saw that the dog sat near the man and wanted to have some meat. But the hunter took a big stick and hit the dog. The poor dog cried and ran away.
The chameleon was afraid and she ran away, too. She ran into the garden and climbed up the tree. She began to shake her head. “Yangu, yangu, yangu!” she cried, “The man is too bad. He hit the dog whereas the dog helped him to hunt. The dog says that he is the hunter’s friend. I will not live near the man. I will live in the garden or forest.” That’s why the chameleon lives in the garden or forest far from man. Whenever she thinks of the man and his big stick, she shakes her head and says, “Yangu, yangu, yangu!” meaning too bad, too bad, too bad!
