Gon was a magnificent cat with silken fur and green eyes belonging to a music teacher who was very proud of him. Koma was a dainty little cat with a pink nose. She belonged to a lady who lived near by.
One day, they saw each other when they were out walking with their owners and fell in love. Their owners, however, were not prepared to part with them. Finally, they decided to elope.
One evening, they both crept out of their homes and at night they rested in a park that belonged to a princess. Suddenly, a huge dog came there and attacked them. Koma ran up a tree in fright but Gon stood bravely because he couldn’t run away in front of Koma. The dog howled and bit Gon. Koma mewed and shrieked.
One of the guards ran up, hearing the commotion and chased the dog away. He picked the poor Gon up and took him to the princess. Koma was left all alone, to fend for herself.
Gon was cared for by the princess and recovered, but he missed Koma sorely. The princess was good and kind, but there was a serpent that loved her and troubled her all the time. If her guards and attendants left her for a moment, the serpent would creep up to her.
One day when she was playing her lute, the serpent slithered up towards the princess. Gon, who was sitting near by, leaped up to catch the serpent. He bit the serpent in the neck, killing him instantly. The princess was so grateful to be freed from the serpent that Gon became her favourite pet.
Now Gon was treated even more lavishly than before. He wanted for nothing. However, he always missed his beloved Koma.
One day as he sat in the garden, basking in the sun, he saw a large ugly cat worrying and teasing a small cat. The small cat looked so helpless that Gon rushed to help her. He chased away the rough-looking cat and turned to find that the little cat was Koma!
He took her inside to let her meet the princess and told the story of their love to her. The princess was so charmed and so grateful to Gon for having killed the serpent that she took Koma also into her home.
The princess too married a prince and they all lived together with their families happily till the end of their life.
