Now, King Shantanu was free from worry after entrusting the responsibility of state affairs to his son Devavrata.
One day, King Shantanu reached the banks of river Yamuna while hunting. There, he saw a beautiful girl sailing in the river. The fragrance was coming from the girl named Satyavati. Shantanu lost himself to that supernatural fragrance. After knowing about her, Shantanu went to her father.
King Shantanu wanted to marry her. The Chief Fisherman agreed, but on the condition that her son would succeed King Shantanu as the next king. How could King Shantanu ignore the claim of Devavrata who was his eldest son? He returned sadly to the palace. Devavrata asked him what had made him so sad. But the king would not tell why he was unhappy.
Soon Devavrata came to learn about the reason of his father’s sadness.
