Materials Required:
l 2 straight pins
l One Rupee coin
Procedure:
- Place the points of 2 pins at directly opposite edges of a one Rupee coin. Keep the pins steady and straight, and gently lift. You may need to try several times before you can pick up the coin without it slipping. If someone is nearby, perhaps you could ask him or her to hold the coin for you while you position the pins.
- Once the coin is securely held between the pins, blow at the top half. The coin will spin rapidly.
This Is What Happens:
A spinning object revolves around a line, and this line is called the object’s axis. You have formed an axis through the coin. This is the line extending straight between the pins. The earth spins around an axis also, but, of course, there are no pins supporting it. The line is imaginary.
