Egg Pore (Science Experiments)

Materials Required:
l Fresh egg
l Bowl
l Hot tap water

Procedure:

  1. Place the fresh egg in the bowl, then fill the bowl with hot tap water.
  2. Set the bowl on a table or counter top and watch closely as the experiment sits quietly for several moments. You will see a tiny stream of bubbles rising from the egg.

This Is What Happens:
Did you know that an egg contains air? The air inside the egg expands as it is heated by the hot water, and escapes into the water as bubbles. You might wonder how the air leaves the egg since the shell is not broken. Well, there are tiny openings called pores in the shell—about 7,000 of them! The pores are big enough to allow gases and moisture to pass through, but small enough to prevent harmful bacterial from getting into the egg.
