Colour-Changing Olive Oil (Funky Physics Experiments)

You will need:

  1. Olive oil
  2. Sunflower or normal
    cooking oil
  3. 2 clear glasses
  4. Green laser pointer

We all love glow in the dark objects, but why do they glow? Understand why fluorescent objects glow, by simply conducting this experiment using a few household products.

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Pour olive oil into a clear glass till it is half full.
  2. Fill up half of the other glass with sunflower oil and line it up next to the olive oil glass.
  3. Take your green laser pointer and shine it into the oil from the side of the olive oil glass so that the laser may go through both the glasses.
  4. Look at the colour of the green laser from the side of the glasses.

RESULT

You will see that there is not only a refraction of light that takes place, but also the green laser pointer when it enters the glass of olive oil and turns reddish-yellow. But, when it exits the olive oil and enters the glass of sunflower oil, it turns green once again. This change in colour in the olive oil takes place because of the molecules in the olive oil, which absorb high energy photons from the laser and release them as low-energy photons.
