You will need:
- A small thin balloon
- Plastic bag
- Scissors
All of you are well aware by now that almost each magic has its basis in science. And to prove that, try out yet another simple science project which makes for a really cool magic trick.
INSTRUCTIONS
- Cut out a small piece of the plastic bag with scissors so that it may be approximately 1 cm wide and 5 cm long.
- Make thin long vertical cuts into the strip, so that the strip may have tassels.
- Blow up a small thin balloon.
- Rub the balloon and the tasselled strip of plastic onto separate portions of clean hair. (works better if rubbed on short hair)
- Hold the rubbed side of the balloon facing up and throw the tassels into the air.
- Try balancing the tassels on the balloon.
RESULT
The plastic tassel floats on top of the balloon. It takes some practice but looks like a floating flower or plant once you have got the hang of it. This happens as a result of static energy. When the balloon and the plastic are rubbed multiple times on hair, both the plastic and the balloon become negatively charged, while your hair will become positively charged. When the plastic tassel comes close to the balloon, they both repel each other since they are both negatively charged, making the lighter plastic float above the balloon.
