Coloured Fire Rainbow (Creative Chemistry Experiments)

You will need:

  1. 5 fireproof glass dishes
  2. Rubbing alcohol
  3. For red, you will need
    lithium from a lithium
    battery
  4. For orange, you need
    bleaching powder
  5. For green, you need borax
    powder or boric acid
  6. For blue, you need kerosene
    or any other fuel
  7. For violet, you need
    potassium chloride or salt
    substitute
  8. Matchstick or a lighter

We all have seen rainbows. What if you could put up a fire display in the colours of the rainbow? Start by assembling these commonly available materials.

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. In 5 fireproof glass dishes, place the materials (lithium, bleaching powder, borax powder, kerosene and potassium chloride) in the order of the colours of the rainbow.
  2. Add the rubbing alcohol to the different materials, and light them up.

RESULT

Each flame will burn a different colour based on the material it is burning.
