Magic Burning Money (Creative Chemistry Experiments)

You will need:

1. A 10-rupee note
2. 95-100% rubbing alcohol
3. Water
4. Lighter
5. Salt
6. Tongs

Have you ever wondered how magicians set fire to money, only to blow it off and still have the note intact.

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Before we begin, remember playing with fire may be fun but it is dangerous. So, perform this experiment with an adult around and pay attention to what you are doing.
2. Make a solution of water and alcohol. Mix 50 ml of water with 50 ml of the rubbing alcohol. Add a pinch of salt to the solution. Mix well.
3. Soak an entire 10-rupee note in the solution.
4. Remove the note from the solution with the help of tongs. Let all the excess water drain before you begin your magic trick.
5. Holding the note with the tongs, turn on a lighter and light the note.

RESULT

The note will catch fire immediately. Wait for the flames
to go out. Be careful. Once the flames have gone out by
themselves, you will see that the note has not burned!! This is because of the alcohol and water mixture. When the note is lit, it is the alcohol which catches fire, but its temperature is not high enough to burn the note.
