A House in the Sky

Long ago, there was a poor but a clever man named Abhilas. Once the Chief called for Abhilas and he came to the Chief’s house. The Chief said, “I have heard that you are very clever. I want you to build me a house in the sky in three days. If you are not able to do that, my soldiers will kill you.” Abhilas agreed and went home. He started thinking. An idea struck him. He made a kite and tied a bell and a long string to the kite. When the wind blew, he flew the kite high up in the air and tied its string to a tree. The next day, everyone heard the bell and assembled. They saw a spot in the sky. Abhilas said to the Chief, “The house in the sky will soon be ready. Can you hear the workers ringing the bell? They need some boards. Ask your soldiers to climb up to the sky and give them the boards.”

Abhilas’ Cleverness

When the chief asked him how the soldiers would climb up, Abhilas said that there is a way up. So, the chief ordered his soldiers to get the boards and follow Abhilas. The soldiers reached the tree and saw the string. “This is the way to the sky,” Abhilas said. The soldiers tried but could not climb up the string. Abhilas said, “Try again! The Chief will be very angry if you don’t carry the boards up to the sky!” Then, the soldiers went to the Chief and said that no man could climb up to the sky. The Chief thought a little and said, “That’s right. Nobody can do that.” Then Abhilas said to the Chief, “Chief, if you knew that, why did you ask me to build you a house in the sky?” The Chief was speechless. Abhilas went up to the tree, cut the string and took away the kite.
