Mrs Colley was baking. The farmhouse smelt warm fresh bread and cake and cookies. When Farmer Colley returned, he would enjoy a wonderful meal. She heard the gate being opened and ran to look out of the window. There was a small, ragged looking boy standing just inside the gate, staring at the farmhouse. Feeling a little worried, Mrs Colley came out. “Who are you, child?” she asked. “I’m Colin, ma’am,” said the boy, “Just caught a sniff of the bread and came closer to smell it!” “Where do you live?” “I’ve got no home,” came the reply, “I sleep wherever I find a place at night.” Mrs Colley said, “Go and have a wash at the pump and come in.” Colin washed and sat at the kitchen table. Mrs Colley gave him a loaf, potatoes and peas with sauce and some milk. Now, Colin worked on the farm and went to school too!
