A Quarrel for Fish

A Quarrel for Fish

Once, Sippi, a heron and Dippy, a hummingbird were fast friends and lived together. Both birds had penchant for fish and always visited the nearby pond to have fish. One year, there was severe famine and all the fish of the pond were about to finish. Few had remained. One day, Dippy said to Sippi, “There doesn’t seem to be enough fish for both of us. Let’s have a race; the first person to perch atop the tree by the river will get all the fish.” Both the birds started their flight from the same spot. The heron flew steadily without stopping. Meanwhile, the hummingbird fascinated towards the smell of the nectar of flowers and kept stopping at flowers along the way to suck nectar. Sometimes he would sleep.

When the hummingbird saw that the heron was far ahead, he zipped past and overtook the heron. But again, he would stop by some flower along the way. Finally, the heron reached the treetop, so he became the owner of all the fish. “I think I like the nectar from the flowers better!” said the hummingbird. The hummingbird, since then, only sucks nectar from the flowers while the heron catches fish from the river.
