A Smile a Day

Mr Dean had a small blue car. He loved driving around in it. He went shopping and to meet his daughter and grandchildren. He took them to buy ice cream and play in the park.
But these days, Mr Dean was frightened to drive anywhere. There were these huge cars, called SUVs, that almost pushed you off the road. He could not find enough parking space, because all the space was taken up by the SUVs and large sedans and luxury cars. Besides, there were many drivers who seemed ready to dash into you and then abuse you! It was dreadful behaviour.
One day as Mr Dean sat on the park bench and thought about his problems, an old friend of his came there. Seeing Mr Dean sitting there looking worried, he joined him at once on the bench.
“Hullo, Dean. What’s the matter?” he asked, “You look worried.”
“Hullo, Walter. You’re right. I am worried,” responded Mr Dean.

“All well at home, I hope,” said Mr Walter.
“Oh! The children are all fine and disciplined. The trouble is about my driving.”
This puzzled Mr Walter. “Your driving?” he asked.
Mr Dean explained his problem. “I cannot ask others to use small cars,” he said, “That is ridiculous. But it is the rude behaviour that I find so difficult to cope with! On the road and at parking lots, people behave so badly, Walter, that I find it is better to avoid driving at all!” “You are right,” commented Mr Walter, “My nephew came up with a way to help. He has stuck smileys on the windshields and the windows of his car, with comments to go with them”
“What kinds of comments?” asked Mr Dean.
“Simple things, really. ‘I’m considerate. Are you?’ or ‘Smile. You look better!’”
Mr Dean laughed. “Does it actually work?”
“There’s no harm in trying, is there?” said Mr Walter.
So, Mr Dean got smiley stickers and put them on his car. He added: ‘A smile a day keeps frowns away!’
He decided to drive to his daughter’s house. On the way, he saw people looking at his stickers and smiling. Some even smiled at him and waved to him!
“Wow!” thought Mr Dean, “This actually works!”

He rang up Mr Walter to thank him. Now, he shared the idea with everyone he knew. He changed the smileys once in a while and added a new sentence.
Nowadays, he has a smiley on the windshield. The graffiti on his car says: ‘A smile a day keeps frowns away.’
Moral: Smiles are better than frowns.
