A Thousand Gold Coins and a Handful of Grains

A Thousand Gold Coins and a Handful of Grains

There lived a proud, rich, pretty and intellectual lady Vidyullatha in Vijaya Nagar.

One day, she put up a hoarding stating she would give 1,000 gold coins if any man won her heart.

Many intellectuals tried their fate but to not avail. One day, a firewood vendor was shouting outside her house. Getting irritated she offered to buy the load to which the vendor demanded a handful of grains. Even after being offered more he stuck to just a handful of grains.

Adamantly, he offered that she could pay him 1,000 coins as announced if unable to pay the price he asked. This disgusted the lady and they both started arguing.

Tiring, they both decided to go to the court. Both kept their case in the court. Pleading the vendor said he asked for a handful grain and not a handful of grains. He explained that he wanted one grain that filled the hand. The lady stood speechless and was compelled to pay him the coins. The vendor was no one else but Tenali Raman.
