A Walk to the Mango Orchard

One evening, Akbar and Birbal had gone for a walk in the mango orchard of the palace. As usual, they were having some witty and intelligent discussions about various situations. All of a sudden an arrow passed over the head of the Emperor. This angered him a lot. He at first thought that someone was conspiring to kill him. So, he instantly ordered his guards to find out from where the arrow came and who was trying to kill him.

After a few minutes, the guards came dragging a boy who was trying to resist them as he was in fear. One guard said, “O lord! This is the boy who tried to shoot you.” Akbar was in so much anger. that he ordered the guards to kill the boy, the same way he tried to kill the Emperor. Akbar said, “You have dared to shoot an arrow at the Emperor of Agra. You will not be spared.” Then he looked at the guards and said, “I order you to kill the boy in the same manner he tried to kill me. Hold him still and shoot an arrow at him. If he doesn’t die, then remember that all of you will be given the same death sentence.”

The boy was very scared and crying. He said, “O lord! I beg your forgiveness. But believe me; I was not trying to kill you. I was trying to aim at a mango in the orchard. But I lost my aim and accidentally the arrow moved towards you. Please believe me and forgive me.”
But Akbar was in no mood to hear anything. He ignored the plea of the innocent boy and ordered the guards to kill the boy. Birbal knew that the boy was innocent and he didn’t like the fact that Akbar was being so ignorant of the truth and the boy’s pleas. He decided to save the boy by making the Emperor realize how much wrong he was at that point as he couldn’t let injustice be served to someone who was innocent.
Then the guards tied the boy to the mango tree and were getting ready to carry out the orders of the Emperor. As one guard got was almost ready to shoot an arrow, Birbal stopped him. Akbar turned towards Birbal with anger and said, “How dare you, Birbal?”
Birbal replied, “I beg your pardon, your majesty. But this is completely unfair. If you want to mete out the punishment to the boy in the same manner he tried to kill you, then the guard will have to aim at a mango and miss the shot so that it may hit the boy.”
And those words made Akbar realize how much wrong he was. He ordered his guards to release the innocent boy.
