Adam Johann von Krusenstern was born on 10th October 1770 in Hagudi, Rapla Parish, Estonia, and he died on 12th August 1846 (aged 75 years) in Tallinn, Estonia. Adam was a Russian admiral and  explorer who led the first Russian circumnavigation of the globe. The main reason for this expedition was the development of the fur trade with Alaska and to establish trade with China and Japan. They also wanted to examine the coast of California to establish if they could set up a colony there. Detailed maps and recordings were made for the entire voyage which was published, including an atlas. His work on counteracting the effects of iron on the compass was adopted by the navy.

Do you know: The Russians named two ships and a crater from the Moon after him.
