Adriaen Block

Adriaen-Block

Adriaen Block was born in 1567 in Amsterdam, Netherlands, and he died in 1627 (aged 60 years) in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Adriaen was best known for exploring the coastal and river valley areas between New Jersey and Massachusetts of the present day. He also set up colonies in Connecticut which were the first ones for that area. Adriaen sailed on the Connecticut river and created the Dutch base that later became Hartford. After his return, he made the map for his voyages in 1614; it shows a lot of features which had not appeared in any map of this region before.

Do you know: Adriaen Block is said to have named Rhode Island, Block Island and Fischers Island, after his friend.
