Ajanta and Ellora Caves are two separate groups of rock-cut cave temples. The Caves are located in Aurangabad District of Maharashtra, India. The Ajanta Caves are older and were built between the 2nd century BCE and 480 BCE, while the Ellora Caves were constructed from the 6th to 9th centuries AD.
Why they are special: The Ajanta Caves consist of 30 rock-cut caves, with paintings and sculptures representative of the Buddhist culture. The Ellora Caves comprise 34 Hindu, Jain and Buddhist caves that were carved out of the vertical face of the Chanderi hills, representing the harmonious relation that existed between these religions during that period.
