Akialoa

The Hemignathus obscurus (scientific name) or akialoa is an extinct species of honeycreepers, which were found on the Hawaiian Islands. Divided into higher and lesser akialoa based on their size and geographic distribution within the Hawaiian Islands, this bird was last seen in 1967. 5-7 inches in length, the beak of the akialoa was almost two-thirds of its body length. The beak was dark and downward curved. Its diet consists of nectar, arthropods and insects, which it probed out of cavities and wood. The plumage was darkish olive-green in colour on the upperparts and a lighter colour on the underparts. Though there aren’t any confirmed reports yet it is assumed that the average clutch-size has 2 eggs. Its IUCN listing is EXTINCT.
