Marble was born in Plumas County, California and began competing in her late teens. In addition to her U.S. singles titles, she won both doubles (1937-1940) and mixed doubles championships (1938-1940). In 1938, Marble won the Wimbledon doubles championship, then returned to Wimbledon the following year to capture both the singles and doubles titles and to secure her status as the dominant female tennis player of the 1930s.
