Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca was born around 1490 in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain and he died 27 May 1559 (aged 69 years), Sevilla, Spain. Alvar is very well-known as the exploration of the New World and one of the four survivors of the 1527 Narvaez Expedition. He spent 8 years in the gulf region of today’s Texas, Arizona and New Mexico. He worked towards the better treatment of the natives and pushed for reforms and advocated policy changes. He authored the first European narrative about North America, providing an anthropological look into the culture of the native Americans.
