Three sub-species are known, viz. Eastern American toad, Dwarf American toad and Hudson Bay toad. The warty toad turns yellow, brown or black in response to humidity, stress and temperature. Its skin produces toxin to deter predators. The moisture-loving nocturnal feeders lash out their sticky tongues at their prey. Males call out to females using a long trill like crickets.
