• Family : Ranunculaceae

It is one of the first spring flowers appearing in March and April. It is a perennial and spread by means of underground roots. The deeply-cut leaves and star-like flowers rise directly from it on separate unbranched stems. In sunshine, the flower is expanded wide, but at the approach of night, it closes and droops its graceful head so that the dew may not settle on it and injure it. The various parts of the plant were used medicinally by the ancient herbalists for headache, tertian ague (tertian malaria) and rheumatic gout.
