Ani

Ani

Ani is a ruined medieval city situated in the province of Kars, in Turkey. Famously known as the ‘City of a 1001-Churches’, Ani was strategically located on many trade routes; as a result of which many religious buildings and palaces were built here. Almost all the structures were built of local volcanic basalt, a tufa stone that comes in a variety of vibrant colours. Before its plunder and downfall in the 13th and the 14th century, Ani was known for its splendour and glory. Even today, it is recognized as a cultural and national symbol of Armenian heritage and pride.
