When it is winter time, many animals fall into a deep sleep. This is known as hibernation. Hibernating animals usually retreat to a den, a burrow, or a hollow log for protection and shelter. Pets like a tortoise, when in hibernation, can be kept in a dry place. A hedgehog likes to roll into a ball when it is hibernating. A bear also hibernates. He eats all he wants and then goes into a cave or a hole and goes off to sleep. His thick fur keeps him warm. The winter ermine does not hibernate but changes its colour in winters. During summers, its fur is brown and in winters, it changes to white colour. This is a camouflaging technique. The ermine can save itself from its predator and merge with the white snow.
