The Ayers Rock or the Uluru is a humongous sandstone monolith that is sacred to indigenous people. It is located in the hearth of the Red Centre desert, within the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park in Australia. The Rock formation is believed to have originally been sand deposited there in the Paleozoic age, 400-300 million years ago.
Why it is special: The Ayers rock is extremely sacred to the Aboriginal people and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is made of red sandstone that stands 348 metres high and has circumference of 9.4 km. However, the Rock is famous for its constant change in colours based on the time of day and year. Flora and fauna, most of which, are not found anywhere else in the world, surround the Ayers Rock.
