It is an annual floating fern and resembles algae. Normally, azolla is grown in paddy fields or shallow water bodies. It multiplies very rapidly. The plants can be dark green, dark red, or dark green with red margins. Thin, branched stems are covered by leaves. Small numbers of unbranched roots are also produced. It is a rich source of protein and vitamins. It is of commercial importance in cultivation in Southern and Eastern Asia as a bio-fertiliser.
