Bamboo, the Snake

A teacher lived in the forest and he was so famous for his wisdom that a lot of students were drawn to him. He had five hundred students. One of the students loved to keep all kinds of pets. One day, he found a poisonous little snake and brought it along as a pet too. He thought the snake was very cute to look at.
He built a cage made of bamboo to keep the snake safe if he had to go away for a while, leaving his pet alone. He loved and fed the snake and chatted with it. The other students named the little snake Bamboo and laughingly they called the pet owner, Bamboo’s Father!
One day, the teacher too heard about the pet that one of his students had kept. He called the boy and asked him about it. “Yes, sir,” said the student, “I have a dear little snake as a pet.”

“Are you aware that your dear little pet is a very poisonous snake and it is extremely dangerous?” asked the teacher.
“Sir, he’s like my son. I love him so much,” replied the student.
“I think you should set him free in the forest. He’s not an animal who should be kept as a pet, because he could bite anyone at any time. And its bite will kill someone. I hope you will be safe but I have a sad feeling that this snake will cause your death. So be very, very careful, won’t you?” advised the wise old teacher.
The student went back feeling he knew his pet better than the teacher. He did not, therefore, take his teacher’s advice seriously to set the pet snake free.
Some days later, the students had to go on an expedition into the forest to collect fruits. Since they had to collect enough for everyone, the task would take a long time. So, the snake was put into his cage and the students went away.

It was quite a few days before they finished their collection of fruits and returned. The pet owner, Bamboo’s Father, came back home too. He went to look up his pet as soon as he returned. “Poor fellow,” he thought, “Sitting alone in the cage for so many days, and without food! I must let him loose to eat.”
He reached out to open the cage. The snake, angry and hungry, bit his master’s hand. A snake’s nature does not change. The student did not even obey his teacher’s wise advice. And he paid the price of his folly with his life!
