With an apt common name, the spook fish has barrel-shaped eyes set inside a transparent head. They can hence look upward to detect the silhouettes of prey. They can even rotate their eyes. Its dark body is covered in silvery scales and a small mouth ends in a snout. It feeds on small zooplankton like hydroids, copepods and other crustaceans.
