Bayou Maçon

Bayou-Maçon

The Bayou Maçon is an area where lies a vast elusive ruin of the largest complex of hunter-gatherers in North America. It is a tributary of the Mississippi in Louisiana, United States. The ruins found on the banks of the Bayou Maçon are said to be even older than the Native Americans.

Why it is special: The elusive ruins found on the banks of the Bayou Maçon have been named Poverty Point because of the plantation that occupied that area. Too big to be spotted by land; and impossible to spot by air due to dense vegetation in the area, the ruins remained undiscovered. However, in 1952 when an archaeologist revised some aerial shots, he found the 6 semi-circular mounds covering about 37 acres of land facing the bayou, with ridges supporting the rows of huts.
