It is a herbaceous annual plant, grown worldwide for its edible fruit, either the dry seed or the unripe fruit, both of which are referred to as beans. The plant has trifoliate compound leaves with oval to rhombic leaflets covered with downy hair. The flowers develop into linear round to slightly flattened pods. Green beans are high in vitamin C and dietary fibre. These are occasionally served fresh in salads but are more often prepared as a cooked vegetable. Green beans are often sold canned or frozen.
