One day, when the court was in session, Akbar’s favourite queen sent word that she wanted to see him. Akbar wanted to finish his work before he left. Soon, the queen sent another messenger asking for the emperor. As Akbar got up to leave, he saw Birbal smiling in a silly manner. Furious, he said, “Birbal! Go away and don’t ever set foot on my soil.” Birbal got up and left quietly. Those who were jealous of Birbal were happy. A month passed thus. Akbar missed Birbal’s sensible advice. One day, when Akbar looked out of his window, he saw Birbal riding a chariot. He called Birbal and asked, “Why are you disobeying me?” Birbal said, “Your Majesty, you asked me not to step on your soil. So I sprinkled soil from the neighbouring kingdom on this chariot. I will step on it throughout my life.” Akbar laughed heartily and forgave Birbal.
