Common name : Jumping spider
Scientific name : Trite planiceps simon
Family : Salticidae
Native to : New Zealand
Interesting fact : These spiders hunt their prey
in the dark with the help of vibratory signals rather
than eyesight.
Ranging from 6 to 13 mm in length, the black-headed jumping spider has elongated front legs. This spider lives in rolled-up leaves and plants. It has been spotted very often in houses, but is considered to be safe, as it does not bite unless provoked. Its diet is comprised of various insects. The female lays around 7 batches of 10-40 eggs each on a self-created silk platform.
